Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their strong form at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.

Everton: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
