Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
