Sam Fender has given the complete sum of his £25k award cash to the MVT, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

He was given the award on mid-October as his new release the album was named the outstanding release of the previous year.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the MVT, in recognition of the vital role small stages had in his early career.

"I personally wouldn't be doing this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I performed around the North East, and further afield, when I was beginning," said Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Recently, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by including a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

Fender also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money assisted locations that were facing potential shutdown due to challenges caused by flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Additional spaces obtained funding support in improving infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that money from shows in big venues helps the local stages, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has stated.

In recent years, they contributed their prize money to the local youth club that developed their group, as well as other local music groups.

Also winners that year they contributed their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was found to have the condition.

"Winning was quite enough," stated vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our success touched the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had protected a couple of local spots in south-east England, by transferring them to local control.

The first in that area and the other in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
