No fewer than 13 individuals killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
