The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
